Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the “Star Spangled Banner”
This year, the Milwaukee Air & Water Show will be a highlight of the U.S. Navy’s commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the “Star Spangled Banner.” The War of 1812 is known as “America’s Second War of Independence” against Britain that started over maritime naval disputes. During this war, the shelling of Baltimore’s Fort McHenry led to Francis Scott Key to write the “Star-Spangled Banner,” our national anthem. Beginning now through 2015, the Bi-Centennial of the War of 1812 marks another opportunity to celebrate the United States as a seafaring nation and our Navy’s heritage.
The celebration will include a series of public events in 16 selected locations along the East and West coasts of the U.S., the Great Lakes and Canada. Milwaukee has been chosen among this elite group of cities. Week-long events in Milwaukee will include visits and tours of U.S. and foreign warships and tall ships, along with numerous additional activities including naval receptions, military band concerts and galas coordinated by state and local governments, private and non-profit companies the week of August 8 – 13.
An 1812 committee has been formed, hosted by Visit Milwaukee. In addition to the Milwaukee Air & Water Show, participants include representatives from the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, the Navy League, Milwaukee Armed Forces Committee, U.S. Coast Guard, Port Authority, Sheriff’s Department, Police Department, Parks and Recreation, American Legion Riders Association, American Legion Post 400 and others.
