The Community Health Initiative Fund was begun in the mid-1980s, when RPCN was created as a result of Preferred Care’s purchase of Rochester Health Network. With the combination of Preferred Care and MVP Health Care in 2006, MVP has continued its commitment to RPCN and the CHIF program.
“Prior to 2010, the CHIF awards have tended to be few in number and substantial in size,” said Lou Paris, RPCN President. “This year, we decided to focus on support for a larger number of organizations and their programs that called for smaller but highly-targeted investments. We are pleased to be able to meet their needs and are confident about the success of their programs and their positive impact on community health.”
The 2010 CHIF grants range in size from $7,100 to the Community Child Care Center of the Third Ward to $20,000 grants to the Rochester Finger Lakes office of the American Lung Association and ABVI Goodwill.
- The Community Child Care Center will use the grant to cover the cost of nurse service, instructors in children’s physical activity and presenters on parenting subjects.
- The grant to the American Lung Association will support asthma self-management education at 15 Monroe County schools.
- ABVI Goodwill will use its grant to support its Project Eye Care, Vision Care for Kids and Early Vision Screening programs to serve 1,000 children and older adults who do not have the financial means for eye care, providing eye exams and free eye glasses, including vision screenings to preschoolers who do not have access to routine eye care.
Other 2010 recipients of grants are: Adonai Community Fellowship,Inc. ($18,000); Cancer Services Program of Monroe County ($7,384); Community Place of Greater Rochester, Inc. ($18,000); Family Service of Rochester, Inc. ($11,000); Ibero American Action League ($17,000); Lifespan ($10,000); Metro Council for Teen Potential ($17,050); Rochester Community Television ($14,750); Rochester School for the Deaf ($7,453); St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center ($15,000); and, Westfall Academy ($18,000).
Since the inception of the CHIF, Preferred Care and, subsequently MVP, have invested more than $9 million in the program. Additionally, Preferred Care and MVP, at the time of the combination of the two health plans, provided a $200 million endowment to fund the creation of the Greater Rochester Health Foundation, which also supports health initiatives in the community.
“MVP is committed to advancing health and wellness in Greater Rochester Area residents,” said Lisa A. Brubaker, the health plan’s executive vice president for Rochester operations and government programs. “Our funding to support the CHIF awards is just one way of meeting that objective, and we are proud of the program’s many accomplishments over the years.”
The Rochester Primary Care Network was established in 1986, and has become the lead agency in the Rochester region advancing the availability of health and health-related services for the poor and underserved. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, RPCN is able to offer uninsured and underinsured patients the financial assistance necessary for making quality health and dental health affordable. RPCN’s 90,000 patients receive care from 26 Affiliated Health Centers, which offer JCAHO accredited medical and dental services. For more information, visit: www.rpcn.org.
