Odwalla Plant a Tree Program Takes Root in Record Time

100,000 trees designated to local state parks in less than two months

08.21.2009 – Half Moon Bay, Calif.-- There’s no doubt America loves its trees and especially the positive impact they have on the environment. Odwalla launched its 2009 Plant a Tree program on Memorial Day, inviting Web site visitors to choose one of 11 state park systems in which Odwalla should plant a tree, free of charge. The program, scheduled to run through December 31, 2009 or until the $100,000 tree fund was depleted, was so successful that all of the trees were spoken for within the first two months.

The trees, once full-grown, will remove up to 24 tons of carbon from the environment each year.

Based on mouse clicks at www.parkvisitor.com/odwalla, Odwalla will be donating trees to be planted in state parks in California, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Utah, Ohio, Texas, Maryland, Michigan and Virginia. The trees will be used to support important reforestation and planting initiatives across the country. No registration or monetary contribution was required to participate.

“Doing good things for the environment has been a core guiding principle for Odwalla since it began nearly 30 years ago,” said Chris Brandt, Odwalla vice president of marketing. “The strong response to the Odwalla Plant a Tree program shows that people are as passionate about the environment as we are and share our commitment to building a healthy environment for generations to come.”

The species of trees donated will vary by region and will be planted in fall 2009 and early 2010. Debuting in 2008, the Odwalla Plant a Tree program will have provided by 2010 more than 160,000 trees to state parks in those participating states.

In addition to the Plant a Tree program, Odwalla strives to help the environment in a variety of ways:
o Using bottles (and caps!) that are recyclable HDPE
o Providing donations to the Organic Farming Research Foundation
o Purchasing Green Energy units from the utility company
o Ensuring that none of the 143 million pounds of citrus that enter its plants end up in landfills
o Employing an anaerobic digestion system on waste water to reduce more than 99 percent of the bio-burden (waste biological material)
