Ohio CPA association’s fall education program prepares CPAs for success in today’s dynamic environment

09.30.2009 – COLUMBUS--The Ohio Society of CPAs (OSCPA) has kicked off its fall professional education season with an aggressive program line up that brings CPAs up to speed on the most critical issues on the horizon. The events range from a broad Professional Issues Update for all members to in-depth sessions for specific industry segments.

The programs were born out of an underlying strategy. OSCPA is committed to providing CPAs with critical resources for operating in a dynamic profession and staying competitive during one of the most difficult recessions in history.

“CPAs in 2009 are dealing with more than a few fast-moving targets that will dramatically change the way they serve clients and the way businesses operate in the future,” said J. Clarke Price, CAE, President and CEO.

“Today’s issues include a challenging economy, major regulatory changes, and a potential overhaul of U.S. accounting standards. This fall’s CPE programs directly address the issues members are most concerned about and provide resources to help them better manage their careers and their businesses.”

OSCPA membership has increased despite the economic downturn, and registrations at continuing education events are on the rise following a successful spring CPE season. OSCPA sponsored new events like the Employee Benefit Plan Audit Conference and added attractions like social networking sessions and free career coaching at larger shows.

Highlights of OSCPA’s fall event line up, include:
Professional Issues Updates(Sept. 8 – Dec. 1) —Led by Price, these interactive sessions held at locations across Ohio give CPAs a chance to discuss personal hot button issues. Key topics include an economic update from Dr. Ken Mayland, President, ClearView Economics, LLC, OSCPA’s response to the IRS’ proposed performance standards for tax preparers, and how proposed financial regulatory reform could affect how clients and CPAs interact. This program is offered exclusively to OSCPA members.

International Tax & Accounting Conference (Sept. 17-Columbus)—This new event provided CPAs with guidance on how global accounting standards may change functional areas such as tax, finance and operations within organizations as well as across industries.

Cleveland Accounting Show (Sept. 23 – 24)—More than 1,200 CPAs attended this event which featured 88 sessions and a new “Emerging Issues” track covering IFRS: What companies need to consider now, an update on XBRL and more. Attendees heard the latest on the FASB Codification project, and sole practitioners learned how to market their practices with the new ,Proud 2B a CPA marketing toolkit. CPAs also scheduled free, individual career counseling sessions with OSCPA Career Coach Janice Worthington.

Additional accounting shows in Cincinnati (Sept. 30 – Oct. 1) and Columbus (Oct. 28 – 29) each feature nearly 50 sessions in multiple tracks such as accounting and auditing, tax planning, and corporate/controllership.

Ohio Auditor of State Mary Taylor, CPA, will give a keynote at The Columbus Accounting Show, outlining the progress she’s made to make state and local government more accountable and root out fraud and waste of taxpayer dollars.

These events represent only a portion of the full fall 2009 CPE programming available through The Ohio Society of CPAs.

A full schedule of OSCPA events, as well as on-demand and flexible CPE programs, can be found on the OSCPA’s online education site. CPAs can register for events online or by calling 888.959.1212. Members and non OSCPA members welcomed.
