This juried exhibition will be held in conjunction with the “Year of Water in Colorado” which celebrates many efforts including the 75th anniversary of the legislation that created many of the water organizations that manage Colorado’s water resources. It will also serve to commemorate the creation of the new “One World, One Water” Water Education Program at Metropolitan State College and the installation of the large outdoor sculpture by the same name. Throughout the year 2012, “Colorado Water 2012” will be connecting Coloradans to their water through resources, events, and activities created by seven “Colorado Water 2012” Committees and by a coalition of over 200 volunteers statewide whose mission is to engage Coloradans in a statewide celebration of water: past, present, and future. Their goal is to have Coloradans to celebrate our unique heritage as a headwaters state and understand the diverse uses and values of this precious resource. For information visit www.Water2012.org.
A year in the making by Denver artist Rik Sargent, "One World, One Water" is a large bronze outdoor sculpture that was commissioned by a private donor and is to be bequeathed to Metropolitan State College in the Spring of 2012. The 12 foot high, 8 foot deep, 10 foot wide sculpture is an infinity form shaped as single drop of water weaving together watersheds and eco-systems. It has been designed as a unity symbol, combining art, science and education and will honor water education here and around the world.
The commission, creation and subsequent conversations around this creation of this sculpture was like a stone thrown in the water creating a ripple effect of excitement and discussion by a number of individuals and organizations. This swell of enthusiasm ultimately led to the conception and formation of the “Year of Water in Colorado” Celebration. The public is encouraged to participate in the many programs and learning opportunities created by this diverse group of water issue advocates and visionaries. Rik, in particular, is looking forward to the expansion of this movement through the arts by providing occasions, like this juried show, for others to join the conversation.
