10.30.2009 – FOX23 announced the station will be working with a team of Tulsa social media experts to help the station reach viewers and further its community connections. The program will begin in November and end next spring and encompasses major social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and potentially other methods of engaging an online audience.
"Social media platforms give FOX23 a great opportunity to reach out to our viewers. Media is changing and so is the way everyone gives and gets information. We recognize news happens not just on TV and on the internet, but happens on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. We are all excited to be a part of this project and the future of communication," said Todd Spessard, FOX23 News Director.
The team working with FOX23 to expand their social footprint includes former KTUL anchor-turned-author Cindy W. Morrison plus Mandy Vavrinak, owner of Tulsa-based marketing and PR agency Crossroads Communications; recognized influence psychology and sales consultant Ron Hudson and leadership coach and technology professional Mike Henry, Sr. All four are very active in the growing social media community in Tulsa and are leading members of the Social Media Masterminds Tulsa group.
“One day, after a mastermind meeting, we were discussing which local businesses had the greatest opportunities to benefit from a more active social community, and we thought traditional media outlets had potentially the most to gain. From that conversation, we decided to approach FOX23 and see if they were interested in growing their social media footprint,” Vavrinak said. All four consultants view the project as pivotal in the development of a social media for business model that works to build the bottom line of any business. "We're excited about helping FOX23 take on a larger leadership role in the community through social media tools," Henry said.
The program FOX23 will undergo aims to increase the station’s ability to gather news and sources, to provide more news to viewers and to connect with viewers to find out what’s on their minds and what stories they want to see covered. The sales staff and some of the production staff at the station will also be participating in the program. "We will be showing the sales staff how to utilize influence and sales strategies that work through social media," Hudson said.
