New Business and Technology Center gives IVC Campus a boost

The building highlights energy efficiency and sustainability at Irvine Valley College

04.20.2009 – (IRVINE, CA) If you’ve driven by Irvine Valley College lately, chances are you’ve seen a new building spring up next to the angular Performing Arts Center. The new Irvine Valley College Business Sciences and Technology Innovation Center (BSTIC) gives students and faculty 54,000 square feet of classroom, office, lab and social space. The two-story building houses the information technology department, business science classrooms, computer labs, lecture rooms, and a resource library.

“This new BSTIC building will raise the business community’s awareness of Irvine Valley College, and will attract new business contacts and students to the college as we finish moving into the building,” describes Bob Urell, Chair of the School of Business Sciences at Irvine Valley College.

While still in the move in process, faculty, students and staff are already pleased with their new building. “Reaction has been overwhelmingly positive,” adds Urell. The extra space is appreciated along with the cohesive look the building gives the campus. Positioned between the angle-rich Performing Arts Center, the créme-colored library and a cluster of brick classrooms, the Business Sciences and Technology Innovation Center combines elements of each.

“This is what we call ''Campus Enrichment,” explains Glenn Carels, higher education Design Principal from LPA Inc. “And notice, it doesn’t look forced. It’s about much more than this one building, the design pulls the look of the entire campus together. We were even able to incorporate corrugated metal from a police building on the opposite side of campus.”

For those familiar with LPA, they’ll recognize the contemporary aesthetic and abundance of green features the firm is known by. The Business Sciences and Technology Innovation Center uses various Sustainable Design features which include: appropriate building orientation, overhangs for shading, recycled and recyclable materials, and a free-standing skin, or wall, adjacent to the building which reduces heat gain caused by the hot afternoon sun.

Materials used in the building are durable and long-lasting which means fewer maintenance costs and a more enjoyable post-occupancy experience. “We chose these materials to give the building a longer life and a looser fit,” continues Carels. Full operation and move in is expected by August 2009, with an official dedication slated for October 2009.

“We are extremely pleased with the facility and the design is better than we ever imagined it would be,” finishes Urell. “LPA has been helpful, easy to work with, and very responsive to our needs.”
