A big congratulations to the Cody Warriors Lacrosse Club on another strong weekend in Jackson! h/t Mike Power for sharing how the team performed.
The Warriors went 2-1 over the weekend. Mike recapped the games:
Game 1: 9-5 WIN vs. Jackson Lacrosse - The Warriors played a great game. The game was tight through half with the Warriors down 3-2. In the first minutes of the 2nd half Cody responded with 2 quick scores to go up by one, and didn't look back. Final score 9-5. This was the Warriors first win versus a very experienced and talented Jackson lacrosse program in the history of our program.
Game 2: 12-1 WIN vs. Pocatello - A lopsided contest versus a young, but scrappy, Pocatello team. Honestly, our kids have never been in a position like this over the last 3 seasons. Cody went up 5-0 in the first quarter, and Coach Vaughn gave opportunities for the kids to play positions that they don't normally play often. Kids that had never carried a 6 foot Defense stick (called a D-Pole) to play on the defensive side of the field, and Defensive players got to experience some glory playing attack and mid-field and score some goals. Although Cody clearly dominated this game, the young (and small) Pokey team were quite scrappy for their size and played with a lot of heart. What was interesting is that this game reminded us of our team last year: out-sized, over-matched, and a no quit attitude. It's amazing how much our team has grown and improved in one year, and gave the team confidence that we have suddenly transitioned into a team that can be competitive with the best teams in our league.
Game 3: 7-6 LOSS vs. Bozeman White - This game, as has been throughout this season with the Bozeman teams, was a battle through the whole game. The teams played score for score with several ties throughout the game. Going into the 4th quarter Bozeman was up by one, and early in the 4th scored another to go up by 2. Cody responded with a goal of their own. Being down 1, Cody played fantastically on the defensive side of the field, and gave the offense a few opportunities to tie it up over the remaining few minutes of the game. Unfortunately, due to some great goalie play by the Bozeman goalie stopping some quality shots on goal, Bozeman was able to hold off the offensive barrage for the win.
Coach Vaughn decided he didn't want to focus on any single player achievements from the games, because of the amazing team play that the players exhibited. He did comment on the great defensive stands throughout the weekend, and these truly were TEAM wins. He also wanted to give his thanks to the amazing parent and fan support that the team has received throughout the season. I can assure you the sideline cheering is dominated by Cody supporters whether at home or away!
Next weekend's bouts in Helena, MT on Saturday, May 21 at 11 AM - vs. Bozeman White (again, this will be the third faceoff between us in as many weeks, and has turned into quite the rivalry! Previously both losses 7-5 and this week's 7-6.)
3 PM vs. Helena Purple (our first meeting with this team this year)
Montana Lacrosse Association State Tournament: June 3-5. Schedule is dependent on seeding.
