French Cancan– Jean Renoir -1954 - 104 min

Set in 1890s Paris, Henri Danglard is the owner of a cafe, which features his mistress, Lola, as a belly dancer. Losing money, Henri finds himself in Montmartre and finds that the old-fashioned can-can is still being performed there. Inspired, Henri comes up with a new business scheme that aims to revive the can-can, featuring a new dancer, Nini, a laundress he meets by chance.

French Cancan is a 1954 French musical film written and directed by Jean Renoir and starring Jean Gabin and María Félix. Where Renoir’s previous film Le Carosse d’or had celebrated the 18th-century Italian commedia dell'arte, this work is a homage to the Parisian café-concert of the 19th century with its popular singers and dancers. Visually, the film evokes the paintings of Edgar Degas and the Impressionists, including his own father, Pierre-Auguste Renoir. It also marked his return to France and to French cinema after an exile that began in 1940.

Starring : Jean Gabin, Françoise Arnoul, Maria Felix

18 March to 30 April - Claude Guenard 'Gold UP' - painting exhibition at Plantation, Sofitel JBR.

Alliance Française Dubai present French artist, Claude Guénard first exhibition at Plantation, Sofitel JBR 'Gold UP'. Claude Guenard generates amazing images through diversion and derision. His works are intervened drawings which he re-makes and re-orders by a reorientation work of the form and the meaning. He de-constructs the basic figures extracted from art and fashion magazines and he sketches over them questioning imagery. The final result is an overdrawn iconography with an incendiary visual force. The spectator is confronted with archetypes of our society revealed on these drawings. The dominating lines, the shapes and outlines achieved by the artist take over the printed backgrounds. The artist is not afraid to reveal the hidden motivations of our society, the secrets of our subconscious mind. Claude Guenard’s drawings are an epitome of personal mythology that encompasses tradition and modernism. He puts forward de-constructed fragments of desire rooted on an urban imagination. The works of Claude Guénard lead us into a world where the other is not reduced to a glossy image, where he is a real actor suddenly placed in the arena of a world now under the sign of contradiction.

Claude Guénard is a painter, engraver and sculptor. He graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts of Paris.
