Dance the Night Away at Rothko Chapel Rothko Chapel’s Summer Sounds on the Plaza continues with Walagante

Celebrate Central America at the Rothko Chapel.  At 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 14Walagante will be performing on the plaza at the Chapel, located at 3900 Yupon St. Suggested donation for the event is $10. Refreshments will be available at the concert, with Sweetcup selling gelato and free beer from Saint Arnold Brewing Company. Walagante is a Houston-based ensemble, performing Garifuna music from Central America, a culture primarily on the Caribbean coast, descended from West African, Central African, Island Caribbean and Arawak people. Drums and maracas are central to this musical style, which was declared a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO in 2001.

The performance is a continuation of the Chapel’s Summer Sounds on the Plaza series. "As a sacred space dedicated to cross-cultural understanding, Rothko Chapel is excited to invite Walagante for what will surely be a fun and beautiful performance," public programs director Michelle Ashton said. "We look forward to an evening of dance and celebration of culture."
