Butch Cassidy. Shootouts in the middle of the street. Wooden sidewalks. Whiskey and mountain sunsets.
The lore of the cowboy conjures up images like this in the mind’s eye, but spending a day with authentic cowboys celebrating the history and culture of the West doesn’t have to live in your imagination anymore.
The National Day of the Cowboy in Dubois, Wyoming, Saturday, July 23 is your chance to mingle with Wyoming cowboys, relive wild shootouts, dance to live music, and taste some whiskey and Western cuisine.
A highlight of the day is always the shootout: a reenactment of a six-shooter confrontation, Old West style, with a fresh script every year.
“We’ve always had the shootout,” said Janeen Sellers, director of Dubois Main Street. “Everybody in the shootout are local young men and women. It’s fun to see them out there doing something we don’t normally do.”
The parade returns this year after a one-year hiatus. The ever popular event will start at 11:30 a.m.
In addition to the shootout and the return of a crowd-favorite parade, Dubois’ National Day of the Cowboy will feature a new attraction: a street fair.
“There will be vendors from all over the place,” said Sellers. “From homemade soap to dry flower arrangements, to jewelry, wood carving …”
Ramshorn Street will be blocked off for a full six hours this year for the street fair, complete with live music at both ends of the street. On top of that, the National Day of the Cowboy will conclude with a whiskey and wine tasting.
