Best-Selling The North Face Denali Jacket Switches to Polartec Recycled Fabric, Wins Award

New Recycled Jacket Saves Millions of Gallons of Gas and CO2

07.30.2008 – The iconic Denali fleece jacket by The North Face will switch to a recycled Polartec® fleece fabric for spring 2009, saving millions of pounds of carbon dioxide and millions of gallons of gasoline. In recognition, Polartec® has awarded The North Face its coveted APEX award for outstanding achievement in design and use of Polartec® fabric.

The Denali, which debuted in 1989, helped introduce the warmth and functionality of Polartec® fleece to the world. A certifiable classic, the jacket has sold millions of units and can be found everywhere from Everest base camp to college campuses worldwide. In 2009, The North Face will switch the Polartec® fleece in the Denali to a new, recycled Polartec® Classic 300 fleece, which contains 87 percent recycled content. The new Denali will save the energy equivalent of approximately .83 gallons of gas and 33 pounds of carbon dioxide per jacket versus a jacket made using virgin polyester.

“Being able to recreate one of The North Face’s most beloved and successful jackets is great. Not only is it a positive step for The North Face, it is a step for the whole Outdoor Industry,” notes Jim Gerson, VP Softgoods, The North Face. “We are dedicated to providing the highest performance products with a strong environmental consciousness and social integrity.”

“The new Denali program really underscores the scalability of our recycled Polartec product line. It will look, feel and perform just like the original Denali, only now with a smaller carbon footprint,” states Polartec® Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Jon Adelman. “We’re incredibly proud of the positive environmental impact this partnership with The North Face will have.”

The prestigious APEX award goes to the best-of-the-best Polartec® based garments each year. Winners are selected based on the style, function and fit of the garment as well as the most innovative and appropriate uses of Polartec® fabrics in the designs. In addition to a Tiffany crystal award and bragging rights for a year, winners can participate in a custom hangtag program promoting these products at the consumer level. Polartec® also provides additional marketing support through product placement with media and events.
