Cleveland Culinary Challenge

Taste Filled Affair Raises Funds for Hospitality Education

Imagine the perfect pairing of Cleveland’s future culinary up-and-comers and some of the area’s star chefs competing Iron Chef-style. Imagination becomes a tasty reality during the 2011 Cleveland Culinary Challenge taking place at the Cuyahoga Community College Hospitality Management Center at Public Square (180 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44113) on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, 5:30–9pm.

The Cleveland Culinary Challenge, presented by U.S. Food Service, benefits Cuyahoga Community College’s hospitality management program and the Spirit of Cleveland, the non-profit arm of Positively Cleveland that supports local hospitality education. With more than $2 billion of tourism-related construction underway in Cleveland now through 2015, it is important now more so than ever to train and develop the future of Cleveland’s hospitality industry.

“The Cleveland Culinary Challenge allows our students to experience the entire menu development process with some of Cleveland's top chefs,” Greg Forte, Tri-C’s Hospitality Management Dean said. “Working side by side with professional chefs in a kitchen situation gives our students valuable experience from concept to service.”

Pepsi Beverage Company generously donated $1,500 to the Cleveland Culinary Challenge scholarship fund which will be awarded to a student from Cuyahoga Community College’s hospitality program. “Pepsi Beverages Company is honored to be a part of the 2011 Cleveland Culinary Challenge. As proud partners with Cuyahoga Community College and Positively Cleveland, we are excited to support this program that ultimately supports local hospitality education,” said Kathy Krieger of Pepsi Beverage Company.

The palate-pleasing event centers around a 45-minute food challenge where talented Tri-C students interested in the culinary arts are paired up with local chefs, Dante Boccuzzi of Dante, Doug Katz of fire food and drink, Karen Small of Flying Fig and Eric Williams of Momocho Mod Mex. A second challenge involves local pastry chefs, Bridget Thibeault of Luna Bakery, Britt-Marie Culey of Coquette Patisserie, and Ron Seballos of Seballos Pastries.

“This is a one-of-a-kind event that takes place in the center of our city in the newest and well equipped educational kitchens in Cleveland,” Doug Katz said. “It is an amazing cause that connects chefs and Tri-C culinary students together to create great rapport and networking opportunities for all of us. It also gives us chefs a chance to give back!”

The friendly competition will be evaluated by author, television producer and recipe tester, Susie Heller; author, journalist and Next Iron Chef judge, Michael Ruhlman; Deputy Food Editor at Food & Wine magazine, Kate Hedding; and Executive Editor at TABLE Magazine, Victoria Bradley.

Guests will sample culinary creations from Pura Vida by Brandt while enjoying exciting demonstrations such as flair bartending, ice sculpting and pastry making. The evening will be topped off with a dessert martini and chance to bid on great silent auction “must-haves.”
