Attleboro Second-Grader Wins Art Contest at RefrigeratorArtist.com

Young Artist Zane Gariepy Awarded Savings Bonds in Monthly Contest

Zane Gariepy, a second-grader at Thacher Elementary School in Attleboro, MA, is the latest young artist to receive $400 in U.S. savings bonds from RefrigeratorArtist.com.

The website, which provides a place for parents to store and share their child’s artwork online, hosts a monthly drawing that any parent may enter for free. Parents enter by selecting one piece of art from their child’s gallery each month to receive votes from other site members. Every vote the artwork receives becomes another entry in the drawing, increasing the artist’s chances of winning the savings bonds that month.

Zane's crayon drawing, entitled "At the Track," depicts a truck at Seekonk Speedway, a racetrack that he and his parents frequent and one that he calls "one of my favorite places to go with my family." He "tried to make it 3D by making a lot of details and a background of the crowd on the other side of the track."

Zane's mother, Stephanie, is the RefrigeratorArtist.com site member who posted his artwork online and entered it in the monthly contest. She then shared it with friends and family via email and Facebook, garnering the votes that increased their odds and ultimately paid off when Zane's artwork won the monthly drawing.

Stephanie, who displays Zane's artwork proudly at home, has enjoyed being able to share it electronically as well. She also points out another benefit of the site and the contest: "As a teacher I think it’s so important to give children an outlet to express themselves—Zane’s outlet is race car/truck artwork. This contest has really boosted his self esteem, coming home each day from school to ask 'how many votes do I have today?'"

Zane intends to use his savings bonds for college, because he wants to be "a police man, a dirt bike rider, and an artist."
