Rocky Mountain Institute selected by U.S. DOE to Partner on Alliance for Residential Building Innovation

Team assembled as part of $30 million Energy-Efficient Housing Partnerships

Snowmass, CO – Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) announced their participation in the U.S. Department of Energy’s comprehensive energy efficiency buildings program.

Announced last week, the program consists of 15 research and deployment partnerships to help dramatically improve the energy efficiency of American homes. These multidisciplinary teams will receive a total of up to $30 million for the initial eighteen months of the projects to deliver innovative energy efficiency strategies to the residential market and address barriers to bringing high-efficiency homes within reach for all Americans.

RMI will be involved in the Alliance for Residential Building Innovation (ARBI) led by California-based Davis Energy Group (DEG), Davis, CA. ARBI will focus on resolving technical and market barriers to large-scale implementation of innovative energy solutions for new and existing homes. Team members are effectively aligned for retrofit activities, providing considerable experience in audits, home performance contracting, marketing, and finance. Additional partners include the University of California - Davis, Heschong Mahone Group, Green Home Solutions, and Bevilacqua-Knight.

This announcement comes as RMI launches its initiative to radically improve the efficiency of residential construction at scale.

“Most people aren’t aware that in new and existing homes, we can dramatically improve efficiency—while also improving comfort and health—without needing to invent new technologies or install on-site renewables,” said RMI Principal Alexis Karolides. “However, there are currently many impediments in the marketplace—recognition of energy efficiency in real estate listings, appraisals, finance, and inspections, and current business practices of homebuilders—that we are preparing to address.”

Partnership selections were made though the DOE Building Technologies Program, which forges research partnerships across the residential building industry to develop cost-effective solutions that dramatically reduce the average energy use of housing while improving comfort and quality. The efforts support the DOE’s Retrofit Ramp-Up initiative, announced by Vice President Joe Biden in April 2010, which brings communities, governments, private sector companies and non-profit organizations together to deliver energy-efficiency upgrades to whole neighborhoods and cities.
