Free Abe Lincoln iPhone application "Bobble Abe" now available from 21stCenturyAbe.org

Philly's Rosenbach Museum & Library becomes 1st area cultural institution to create iPhone app

PHILADELPHIA - The Rosenbach Museum & Library has launched an Abraham Lincoln iPhone and iPod Touch application as part of its 21st-Century Abe project. 21stCenturyAbe.org is an interactive website which takes a look at Lincoln through modern eyes and celebrates his 200th birthday through creative interpretations of his life, work and words.

The “Bobble Abe” iPhone application, which is available for free in the iTunes store, portrays Abe as a bobble head that users can shake and bounce, along with humorous Lincoln quotes as recorded by Philadelphia comedy theater company 1812 Productions, with actor Nathan Holt as the voice of Abe. The application was developed by Laan Labs, a Philadelphia-based company. In the first few days since the app has launched, it has already been downloaded over 500 times.

1812 Productions also created a new 4-part video mockumentary, “Abe Lincoln: Behind the Speeches,”,which launched last week on 21stCenturyAbe.org.

This innovative website encourages visitors to participate in the conversation about the 16th President of the United States, view the handwritten Lincoln documents (along with transcripts) digitally and contribute responses in words, songs, videos, photos, drawings, web links and other media.

21st-Century Abe sheds light on Lincoln’s views on race, his patterns of thought and rhetoric, and his role as a celebrity, both in his own day and ours. The 30 featured documents, many rarely seen by the public, range from the Baltimore Address to Lincoln’s attempt to explain his family history.

The site features creative interpretations of the Lincoln materials by scholar Douglas Wilson, artist/illustrator Maira Kalman, musician Bryce Dessner of the band The National, multimedia artists Archive(Anne Walsh and Chris Kubick), and 1812 Productions.

The project has been funded by The Pew Center for Arts and Heritage, through the Heritage Philadelphia Program with additional support from the Marketing Innovation Program. Additional support has come from the Samuel S. Fels Fund and The Raab Collection.
