Two Russell Herder Campaigns Recognized with National Health Information Awards

Awards honor the nation’s best consumer health programs

MINNEAPOLIS - September 16, 2011 - Minneapolis marketing firm, Russell Herder, was the recipient of both Gold and Merit honors as part of the 18th Annual National Health Information Awards. Acknowledged was work Russell Herder conducted in partnership with two state agencies: the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS).

The Gold Award was received in the Total Health Information Program category for “StopSyph Minnesota,” a campaign designed to increase awareness about syphilis among communities with the highest rate of infection, while the Merit Award was received in the Video category for the agency’s problem gambling informational video. According to the awards website, entries are reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges who evaluate entries for content and design/creativity.

“StopSyph Minnesota” won the Gold Award for its creativity, edginess and attention-getting campaign components. Developed based on intensive research within the target market, the campaign employed imagery and messaging utilized in such high traffic locations as Facebook, Craigslist and restaurants. In addition, a microsite, stopsyphmn.com, was launched to act as an online information resource.

“We are honored by the award and proud of what we were able to accomplish for the MDH,” said Brian Herder, executive creative director at Russell Herder. “We learned a great deal from listening to our target market and created a high-impact public service campaign that generated successful results.”

“StopSyph Minnesota” is one of a series of campaigns for STD prevention the agency has developed for MDH, a Minnesota government division that specializes in promoting good health and ensuring a safe and healthy environment.

The Merit Award recognized a series of videos Russell Herder produced to help people identify, and reach out to, individuals who suffer from a gambling addiction. Using stories from those affected by problem gambling, whether it was the gambler themselves or a family member, the video demonstrated the damage this addiction can have, but most importantly, offered information on treatment options.

Problem gambling is an issue that devastates far too many individuals,” said Herder. “We really wanted to reinforce the message that there is hope – even in what might seem like a desperate situation – and to remove any stigma attached to the idea of seeking professional assistance for this addiction.”

Russell Herder has developed various award-winning campaigns for the state organization over the past eight years.

The most recent National Health Information Awards follow multiple accolades in 2011 for Russell Herder’s healthcare work, including a Healthcare Advertising Award, two Aster Awards and an IABC Bronze Quill.

The National Health Information Awards program honors high-quality consumer health information. The awards program is organized by the Health Information Resource Center (HIRC), a national clearinghouse for consumer health professionals who work in consumer health education fields.
