Has Twitter Killed Journalism?

University of Oregon event explores the effect of Twitter on Journalism

EUGENE, Ore -- Some students are concerned that Twitter's citizen journalists will make the study of journalism arcane.

Not to worry, says the deputy editor of congress.org, Ryan Teague Beckwith.

"It's like baseball," explains Teague. "Anyone can play baseball, but we also have some professional baseball players. Anyone can commit journalism now on Twitter or Facebook or their blog. But we also have professionals."

For young and old communication professionals, social networking provides new opportunities, challenges and problems.

The 211 participants and nine panelists discussed issues ranging from the effect of social media on journalism to advice for aspiring reporters.

The University of Oregon hosted the online event on Oct 15, 2009. The transcript is available at coveritlive.com.
