Cole, a Philadelphia native, moved to Seattle at the age of 7. He became inspired to look into advertising after his UO dormitory roommate introduced him to the program; however, Cole admits he even performed spoofs of ads in high school. While a student at UO, Cole spent time as the president of the student-run advertising firm.
After graduating, Cole interned at Wieden + Kennedy, a world-renowned advertising agency. “I basically stalked Dan Wieden for four months before that,” joked Cole. During his time at the agency, he helped lead Nike from the No. 5 world soccer brand position to the very top by 2009. After seven years, Cole collaborated with John Boiler, a colleague from Widen + Kennedy, and founded 72andSunny.
The company serves diverse clients, from Quicksilver to Nike, that characterize modern global culture under the goal of “unleashing creativity across all platforms."
O’Leary, born in Santa Monica, began his career at J. Walter Thompson, one of the world’s largest advertising companies.
After graduating, O'Leary joined the November Group and served on Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign. Eventually, he and his wife, Patty Hearn, returned to Southern California. It was there that he became the executive vice president of the Newport Beach office of Wells Rich Green. He later started his own business, O’Leary and Partners Advertising.
Since starting the company, O’Leary has coauthored two books: "Building Buzz to Beat the Big Boys" and "Word of Mouth Marking for Small Businesses." He has also served dozens of clients and spoken at more than 100 conventions, classes and workshops.
Both Cole and O’Leary will receive the School of Journalism’s Hall of Achievement award, given to prominent graduates from the UO. “Both Cole and O’Leary have come a long way since their time at the university, and we are pleased their journey began here,” stated the School of Journalism’s dean, Tim Gleason. The event will occur at the Eugene Country Club, 255 Country Club Road. The reception begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and awards at 6:45 p.m.
