The Senior Experience provides students with an opportunity to gain real-world experience to put on student's résumé and an inside look into a specific field of work. Approximately 20 to 25 students are selected for the program each term. Students must be in good academic standing (3.0 or higher), demonstrate strong communication skills and be approved by a faculty panel to gain admission into the program.
The program advisor will always try to arrange for students to be paid; however, compensation is not guaranteed. The Senior Experience has served more than 75 students in six terms and is supported by more than 50 professional partners. This successful program has helped many students begin careers.
"With the help of the program I was able to land a great internship at Umpqua Bank that I would otherwise have never been able to experience," said Alyssa Carter, recent SOJC graduate. "One of our classes took us all around Portland and let us meet several influential people in the PR industry -- leaders from Edelman, Fleishman-Hillard and Rocky Hill & Knowlton."
“The Senior Experience Program is designed to give students a significant advantage over other candidates who are competing for the same professional opportunities,” said Josh Netzer, Senior Experience program manager. “With a difficult economy and a large number of young professionals moving to the Portland area, having professional experience, a spectacular portfolio and solid contacts puts many recent SOJC graduates in a position to capitalize on those opportunities.”
Applications for the Senior Experience are available from Bil Morrill, the School of Journalism & Communication's Career Services coordinator, in 134B Allen Hall.
The fall term deadline is in March, and the spring term deadline is in November. To speak to someone about the academic side of the Senior Experience, contact Bil Morrill via e-mail at bmorrill@uoregon.edu or via phone at (541) 346-2171.
