University of Oregon Celebrates Ethical Journalism

NPR's Brooke Gladstone co-hosts "Journalism in the Future Tense-Reclaiming the Moral Voice"

The University of Oregon invites students, professionals, and the public for a discussion of ethical issues as they relate to the media and their constituencies. The event is the University’s second annual Hulteng Conversations in Ethics conference.

-The conference begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m., on Friday, May 15, in the George S. Turnbull Center at the UO campus in Portland.

-Brooke Gladstone, co-host and managing editor of NPR’s “On the Media,” will deliver the Hulteng Conversations keynote address.

-Events are free and open to the public, but registration is required. There is an online registration form available on the University’s journalism Web site: http://jcomm.uoregon.edu/hulteng

-The title of the conference is “Journalism in the Future Tense-Reclaiming the Moral Voice.” Journalists, academics, and students will discuss “What is happening to journalism today-and how will it evolve as we move into an uncertain future?"

-The John L. Hulteng Conversations in Ethics is an annual event made possible by the family of John Hulteng, former SOJC dean and professor, who set standards of journalism ethics that remain intact today.

-During lunch, there is a planned presentation of the 10th annual Payne Awards for Ethics in Journalism, with a panel discussion to follow among the 2009 winners.

-Nick Perry and Ken Armstrong of the Seattle Times and Glen Mabie are the 2009 Payne Award Winners.
