11.17.2009 – In response to the recent announcement that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recommended women should begin mammograms at 50 - not 40, #mammo represents the online voice of those who support earlier detection and prevention.
On social networks like Twitter and Facebook, individuals can use the hashtag (or pound sign) along with the word mammo (e.g. #mammo) to show support for screenings at 40 or support for early detection in general. (Early detection includes self exams.)
According to the American Cancer Society, "Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save many thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests."
An overview of all recommendations for mammograms can be found, here.
In a recent article on CNN, "The task force is composed of 16 health care experts, none of whom are oncologists. The group reviews medical data and bases recommendations on effectiveness and risks involved."
And, according to a Q&A piece in USA Today, Liz Szabo, shares a differing opinion, "Although doctors promoted breast self-exams for many years, there's now good evidence to show they don't help save lives, the task force says. And while women without access to mammograms may benefit from examination by a doctor, those exams don't add protection to women already having mammograms. There's also not enough data to recommend digital mammograms or MRIs in place of traditional film mammograms, the task force says."
You can share your thoughts and opinions online with the #mammo hashtag.

UPDATE: All points of view are welcome to use the #mammo hashtag. Ultimately this is about breast cancer awareness and detection.
