After 20 years of hosting local competitions for home builders and remodelers, with our Home of the Year and Remodel of the Year competitions, KCH&G reached out to a new group: landscape professionals and garden aficionados. The 2011 Gardens of the Year competition was launched in early spring, inviting anyone with a green thumb to share their home projects with us. The categories were as follows: Best Curb Appeal, Best Professional Landscape, Best Outdoor Living Space, Best Backyard Garden, Best Water Feature and Best Pool. KCH&G procured four judges unaffiliated with magazine to make the selections: Alan Branhagen, Director of Horticulture at Powell Gardens, Kurt Kraisinger, landscape architect and president of Lorax Design Group, Dennis Patton, Director of the Johnson County K-State Extension Office, and Lyndsi Oestmann, the current president of the Hort NetWORK. KCH&G received more than 55 entries into the competition and awarded 6 winners and 6 runners-up at a ceremony in August. The winners are also featured in the October 2011 issue of the magazine.
