Storm Surfers TV Documentary Captures Big Wave Surfing Action at its Best

World Premier documentary combines high technology with high action in Storm Surfers: New Zealand

New Storm Surfers TV Documentary combines high technology with high action in Storm Surfers: New Zealand. Big wave surfing legends Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones get together with Ben Matson, meteorologist and professional storm surf tracker in this epic adventure, coming to the Discovery Channel, July 14, 2010.

Using state-of-the-art GPS devices and satellite storm tracking technology, the Storm Surfers crew is on a mission to capture the experience of surfing the world's biggest waves in the worst possible weather conditions on film. After several hair-raising near misses, they finally find what they are looking for in the remote Fiordland region of southern New Zealand.

Getting to their destination and recording the action in brilliant HD is half the battle. After a 44 kilometer (27 miles) stomach churning jet ski trek across storm swept seas, the surfers, camera crew and support team finally reach their goal. All the action is captured from the air and the water from three different camera angles as Tom and Ross tackle ice cold water, gale force winds, a sub-freezing wind chill factor, brutal hailstones and some of the most dangerous surf conditions in the world.

Nature almost did not cooperate with the Storm Surfers crew and only came through with the waves at the last minute. In spite of Ben's meterological expertise, she just wasn't keeping to their time schedule. As two-time World Champion, Tom Carroll comments: “Mother Nature has no idea of time. We came up with it and tried to impose it on her."

Big wave surfing maestro Ross Clarke-Jones, calls their escapade, "the epitome of extreme surfing." In the documentary, he recalls that when he took off on his first wave, "it was blowing a full gale." Ross came out of that wave uninjured except for the nasty blood blister he got when a hailstone pelted him in the face while he was riding the wave.
