Moodagent song characteristics include moods, genres, sub-genres, styles, tempo/beat, instrumentation and production features. All of this information is simplified into five touch screen sliders depicting the moods expressed by a recording. Moodagent can also create playlists automatically by finding songs with similar mood profiles in the listener’s personal music collection. The app is available for free on iTunes.
This week Idol contestants Michael Lynche (Image 1) and Siobhan Magnus (Image 2) did the least to change the mood profile of their covers. Magnus made no changes at all to the moods of Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire” while Lynche only added a little more anger to India.Arie’s “Ready for Love”. Simon Cowell was critical of Magnus for approaching every song the same way rather than for her lack of originality.
The other 8 contestants showed more variety in their interpretations of R&B standards. For example Casey James performed the Sam & Dave hit “Hold On, I’m Coming”. His updated version has more passion and anger and a slower tempo. He kept one emotional signature of the soul men’s original intact: tenderness.
Of course, Moodagent won’t reveal who has pitch problems. That’s up to America.
