Moodagent Pits American Idol Top 9 Against The Beatles

Mobile app exposes similar Mood Profiles among front-runners while bottom two contestants emphasize passion

SAN FRANCISCO – Moodagent, the free music playlisting application for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch, reveals a few surprises in the newly released American Idol covers of nine Lennon & McCartney hits. The app visually demonstrates how each contestant modified a Beatles tune in terms of mood and tempo, and differences in the playlists generated by the original and Idols version of each song. Anyone can do a comparison of different song covers using Moodagent, just by adding the songs to their personal music collection.

Moodagent song characteristics include moods, genres, sub-genres, styles, tempo/beat, instrumentation and production features. All of this information is simplified into five touch screen sliders depicting the moods expressed by a recording. Moodagent can also create playlists automatically by finding songs with similar mood profiles in the listener’s personal music collection. The app is available for free on iTunes.

This week, Moodagent reveals almost identical song profiles across three of the top nine Idols contestants: Aaron Kelly, Lee DeWyze, and Casey James. The defining emotion for each of their covers: tenderness. For Kelly and DeWyze, this was a significant change from the original recordings by The Beatles. James simply choose a Lennon song with intense tenderness: Jealous Guy.

The three song profiles are a close match on all five Moodagent sliders, as evidenced in the mood profiles for Hey Jude (Image 1), Jealous Guy (Image 2), and The Long and Winding Road (Image 3).

Coincidentally, the bottom two contestants -- Michael Lynche and Andrew Garcia -- each put the emphasis on passion, rather than tenderness, in their versions of Beatles hits.

Of course, Moodagent won’t reveal who has pitch problems. That’s up to America.
