Friday is Take Your Dog to Work Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 21, 2011

Friday, June 24, is the 13th Annual Take Your Dog to Work (TYDTW) Day, created by Pet Sitters International (PSI). On this day, businesses across the nation are encouraged to allow employees to bring their dogs to work. PSI hopes that promoting the relationship between owners and their canines will strengthen the human-animal bond, as well as encourage non-pet-owning co-workers to adopt pets from their local shelters.

PSI created this day in 1999 to encourage the American, and even the global, workforce to adopt dogs if emotionally and financially able to provide a pet with a loving and healthy home. This year, TYDTWDay has also partnered with Adopt-a-Pet.com to make the search even easier for potential pet owners.

On the TYDTWDay website, takeyourdog.com, a downloadable Action Pack is available that explains how businesses can get involved. It includes things like a sample dogs-in-the-workplace policy and an employee participation form. It even addresses what to do if your office is closed on a Friday or if you have some employees who would like to bring in their cats. Pet owners can also submit an “at work” photo of their pal for a chance to win $500 cash, a $500 donation to a shelter of their choice and a prize pack.

“Many past participants have decided to make the day an annual event after enjoying a fun-filled day with their dogs,” said Beth Stultz, TYDTWDay spokesperson. “It’s also a creative way to fundraise and make donations to local shelters.”

Many studies have documented the advantages of allowing pets to join their owners at work. A study performed by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA) noted several positives regarding pets in the workplace, including an increase in creativity and productivity, a decrease in absenteeism and an overall boost in office morale.
