STONY PLAIN, AB – With summer finally here, the Town of Stony Plain has started work on its annual street improvements program and the projects scheduled for 2011.
“The Town is committed to ensuring that our infrastructure is maintained in a balanced and structured way,” says Ken Lemke, mayor of Stony Plain. “The projects scheduled for this year align with a well-planned, long-term strategy.”
Street Improvements Rehabilitation projects scheduled for this season include:
* 44 Ave. (from Golf Course Rd. to South Park Dr.): asphalt overlay
* South Park Dr. (from 44 Ave. to Hwy. 16A): asphalt overlay
* 51 Ave. (from 50 St. to 52 St.): sanitary sewer and water main replacement; concrete sidewalk; curb and gutter rehabilitation and asphalt overlay
* Meridian Heights (40 Ave. and 42 St.): asphalt overlay and sanitary sewer spot repairs
Improvements will also be made to sidewalks, curbs and gutters in specific areas. Residents and businesses within any affected areas will be contacted and informed about any potential inconveniences prior to any work commencing.
BACKGROUND
In 2009, the Town developed a 10-year Municipal Infrastructure Plan to assess the condition of the community's roadways, sidewalks, sanitary sewers, storm water systems and water mains. The plan identifies and prioritizes the level-of-need for infrastructure repairs and rehabilitation, including street improvements. The Town followed this plan to determine the projects for 2011.
Council approved this year’s projects, and Administration’s recommendation that the Town award the contract for the work to G.S. Holdings, at the regular Town Council meeting on July 11, 2011.
Costs for the $3,169,134 initiatives include 10 per cent contingencies, testing and engineering fees and are sourced from the Street Improvement Program (SIP), Federal Gas Tax (FGT), Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) and sewer and water reserves. Associated Engineering Alberta, Ltd. will oversee project management of the program.
