EXHIBITION-IN-PRINT Volume I
"Lateral Learning" is a collaborative, exhibition-in-print project curated by Canadian Artist Paul Butler and published and produced by Vantage Art Projects (Sherri Kajiwara and Jennifer Mawby).
The project is comprised of a hard-cover book that opens with a survey of Paul’s current work, and follows with work selected from artists in response to our curatorial theme of community and collaborative methods of learning. Through comparison, contrast and categorization the publication investigates ways in which Paul and the other artists included are producing and/or facilitating work in this ideological vein.
The dust jacket is an open edition multiple created for the project by Mark Clintberg and Paul Butler and designed by Ryan Crouchman. The artwork outlines a fantasy curriculum and reading list for life-long learning about community, art and disaster. A limited-edition archival fine art print of this Lateral Learning Syllabus is also available in an edition of 15 (3 AP).
Creative, critical writing essays on the topic were commissioned for this publication by Dr. Jeanne Randolph and Mark Clintberg.
The open artist call was a curatorial statement relevant to Paul’s current investigations and interventions with ideas and practices related to “Reverse Pedagogy”. This inquiry was labeled “Community and Collaboration as a Form of Pedagogy” which we further defined as collective methods of learning and creating. The response to the call for submissions was impressive and ranged from work centered in humour, social and gender issues, peer pressure, dating and romance, reading and identity. From the open artist call, artwork from 30 artists and collaborative teams was chosen for publication through an equitable, blind-jury selection process.
The “Lateral Learning” book, with open edition dust jacket multiple will be launched in February, 2009. The fine-art edition print of the Lateral Learning Syllabus (edition of 15) will be available at the same time through the Vantage Art Projects Website, and select gallery outlets.
