Broward County Bottleneck, BPA + Baby Bottles: Teen Presents Research to Broward County League of Cities

Wendi Oppenheim, South Florida teen and Pine Crest senior takes recognized Bisphenol-A (BPA) research to the Broward County League of Cities; argues for passage of The Broward County Toxin Free Toddlers and Baby Act

Fort Lauderdale, FL – Broward County seems to have a bottleneck when it comes to passing health and safety legislation, says Wendi Oppenheim, a high school senior who is passionately advocating to protect the children of South Florida from the dangerous chemical Bisphenol-A, or BPA. Research shows that BPA causes negative health effects including cancer, obesity, diabetes and reproductive health issues.

In fact, several governing bodies across the country have already recognized the implications of BPA. In May, the Vermont House of Representatives approved legislation that would restrict the use of Bisphenol-A. Similar Toxin Free Toddlers and Baby Acts have also passed in Canada, three New York counties, the City of Chicago, as well as by the State Legislatures of Minnesota, Connecticut and Wisconsin.

Oppenheim, a nationally recognized high school researcher, is expected to be challenged by a lobbyist from the chemical industry that will attempt to prevent the passing of the Act.

After presenting her findings to the Broward County Commission this year, Mayor Ken Keechl instructed Oppenheim to share her presentation with the League of Cities in an attempt to ensure each municipality’s endorsement of passing The Broward County Toxin Free Toddlers and Baby Act.

Oppenheim presented evidence for the passage of the Act but was told to present further written material for the League’s consideration. In May, Oppenheim subsequently submitted a 432-page research BPA manual broken down into 5 sections: Legislative History; Articles; FDA; Prior Studies; and a list of Retailers and Manufacturers who have withdrawn BPA products.

Broward Mom Speaks Out
Broward mom of two Maria Harrison fears without legislation, countless South Florida infants will go unprotected from the dangers of BPA. “It is society’s job and the government’s job to protect our babies from this toxic chemical. I sincerely hope the Broward County League of Cities will listen to Wendi and put a toxin-free baby and toddler act immediately into effect in Broward County.”
