West Coast Green Show Gardens to Transform Fort Mason Center

Living Walls, Storm Water Filtration, Transformative Design Sciences to be Featured

San Francisco, CA - West Coast Green, the largest conference on green innovation of the built environment, will enliven Fort Mason Center through the addition of more than 20,000 square feet of living plants, trees, green walls and gardens transforming the historical military base into an interactive delight to the senses.

"Our team will be using native and edible landscape features to demonstrate ways that urban settings can be improved and beautified," said Josiah Cain, West Coast Green's Show Gardens Project Lead, and Chief Design Officer at Design Ecology. Mr. Cain is a Harvard trained landscape architect and has led project teams for civic clients such as the New York Dept. of Environmental Protection, University of California, and the California Academy of Sciences.

In building the Show Gardens at West Coast Green, Cain is leading an extraordinary partnership of contributors including the San Francisco Unified School District, whose students will create a community garden demonstration; architect Darrel DeBoer and bamboo artist/builder Kevin Rowell, founder of The Natural Builders, who will create a hanging garden support structure of bamboo timbers; and Free Design Clinic, whose members will transform 8 parking spaces into gardens.

"I approach this as an opportunity to showcase community based, scientifically sound urban landscapes capable of mediating storm water runoff into the San Francisco Bay," Cain continued. "As the City seeks to mitigate water pollution caused by uncontrolled runoff, we hope the West Coast Green displays at the Fort Mason Center will provide examples of practical, elegant design solutions."

West Coast Green will occupy two piers at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco from October 1st through the 3rd. The Expo features over 300 exhibitors, the Innovation Pipeline, Demo Stage, and Green Jobs Pavilion. The Conference covers educational topics in green innovation - including green building, smart systems, clean tech, and social innovations - and will host 125 speakers.
