WFAE expanded its local news staff with the additions of Tasnim Shamma and Michael Tomsic. Both joined the station last month. These new reporters will help the station with its increased focus on more local news content throughout the day by contributing to hourly newscasts and local news during Morning Edition (M-F 5-9 a.m.) and All Things Considered (M-F 4-6:30 p.m.)

“We’re very pleased to welcome Tasnim and Michael to our news team. Their arrival completes our goal this year to double the size of the WFAE local reporting staff to better cover local issues important to Carolinians," said Dale Spear, WFAE content and program director. "They arrived just in time to help us add to the coverage of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte and made significant contributions to news reporting."

While local news coverage has been a mainstay of WFAE's mission, adding more news reporters will allow the station to better serve the community.

"In the coming months we hope you’ll notice the difference in the number of stories devoted to local issues and news as we strive to improve the public radio service our listeners hear and support. The WFAE News Staff now has six full-time reporters in addition to our program hosts, producers and editors," Spear added.

Shamma comes to WFAE following a Kroc Fellowship at NPR where she did reporting, writing, editing, blogging and producing for NPR's Digital News Desk, Weekends on All Things Considered and the National Desk in Washington, D.C. She also spent three months at WLRN, based in The Miami Herald newsroom. She graduated from Princeton University.

Tomsic was a freelancer and intern for WFAE while he finished his senior year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also interned at NPR's Weekends on All Things Considered, where he contributed to the show's cover stories and produced interviews.

WFAE’s local news department is dedicated to providing quality, in-depth reporting and interviews with key newsmakers on issues, trends and events in the Charlotte region.
