Whitehead Energy Solutions Helps Shine New Light On Liberty Science Center

Lighting Retrofits Will Save the Organization More Than $50,000 a Year

Whitehead & Associates, an Atlanta-based electrical manufacturer’s representative, is pleased to announce the completion of a lighting retrofit project at the Jersey City, N.J.-based Liberty Science Center. Together with Atlanta-based Regency Lighting and Durham, N.C.-based CREE, Inc. (Nasdaq:CREE), Whitehead Energy Solutions worked with the center to retrofit more than 1100 light fixtures. The project began in April 2010 and was completed in mid-June.

Vic Rispoli of Regency Lighting says that although he’s used to working on projects of this size, this specific project offered a unique challenge, “Being that it is a museum, we not only had to concern ourselves with occupant comfort, but with how the lighting would both showcase and protect the facility’s contents. We therefore chose a specific product, the CREE LRP38.”

The CREE LRP-38 offers candlepower of 4000 with a beam angle of 20 degrees and is designed to replace 50W – 90W halogen PAR38 bulbs in museum and retail applications. The input power is only 12 watts, resulting in a total delivered minimum efficacy of 42 lumens per watt, and its lamp is designed to last 50,000 hours in open-track fixtures.

“Both the quality and quantity of light we achieved with the use of the CREE LRP 38 product allowed us to maintain our high lighting standards as well as further our goals to reduce energy consumption,” said Ron Taglieri, Chief Engineer at Liberty Science Center.

The entire project is expected to save Liberty Science Center more than $50,000 annually, which will return the cost of its investment in approximately two years or less. All together, these retrofits will save the Liberty Science Center more than 90,000 kWh annually and contribute more than 55 metric tons of CO2 avoidance – which is roughly equivalent to taking 35 cars off of the road.

“As a specifier and energy consultancy, we are especially glad to direct this kind of project,” explains Richard Greene of Whitehead Energy Solutions. “This facility had a unique need, and we were able to leverage our knowledge and partnerships to find not only the best product, but the one that would afford the greatest energy efficiency. It is really great to see that come together, but not surprising since partners like Regency and CREE are easy to rely on.”
