Whitehead Energy Solutions, an energy efficiency division of an Atlanta-based electrical manufacturer’s representative, is pleased to announce the completion of a lighting retrofit for Zoo Atlanta, a private nonprofit wildlife park and zoological trust.
“When I first joined the Zoo in March of this year, I was immediately introduced to our capital project wish list. One of the projects was a revamping of the main gift shop’s lighting. I looked at this project as an opportunity to save on the cost of electricity and improve the aesthetics of our retail space,” explained Chris Rdzanek, Director of Facilities and Construction, Zoo Atlanta.
With a background in sustainability, Rdzanek knew the lighting retrofit would generate the results needed to significantly improve energy efficiency. Zoo Atlanta, which also received a $1,000 rebate from Georgia Power, is committed to green practices supporting the conservation of natural resources for wildlife and their habitats around the world.
Rdzanek and his team replaced 115 halogen ceiling cans, which were transformer-driven and in some cases no longer working with CREE’s LE6™ and CR6™ recessed downlights. Designed to easily install into existing 6-inch housings or in new construction applications, the LE6™ and CR6™ provides higher efficacy and longer life than Compact Fluorescent Lamps with the beautiful light quality that you would expect from an incandescent.
Rdzanek says the change has been met with positive feedback. “Everyone here at the Zoo is just thrilled with the outcome. We probably have three times as much light in the facility, and we have seen a measureable uptick in sales with the brighter space.”
The retrofit is expected to increase the lifecycle of these lights by more than 10 years and will reduce ongoing maintenance costs. Further, the 80 percent energy savings extends through the entire life of the equipment. Rdzanek says the success of this project has led the way for planning additional lighting retrofits throughout the facility. “Sustainability efforts are very important to us at Zoo Atlanta, and we’re delighted to be able to showcase such a positive example of conservation, which is at the heart of our mission.”
