Wall Street Journal confirms Wyoming as prime location for data centers

CHEYENNE – An article, “Wyoming Plays It Cool”, published today in The Wall Street Journal, reaffirmed Wyoming’s position as one of the best places in the United States for data centers.

The article touts the state’s cool climate, abundant and inexpensive power and targeted incentives as reasons for data centers to locate in Wyoming.

Wyoming Business Council CEO, Bob Jensen, says the article recognizes the state’s attractiveness.

“We’re delighted that The Wall Street Journal has recognized Wyoming as a digital industries leader,” he said. “We have a comprehensive package of attributes including a very temperate climate, abundant low-cost power supplies, very favorable business tax environment, a well trained work force and focused financial incentives to bring these high tech companies and jobs to Wyoming.”

The Business Council has made the growth and recruitment of data center and other high tech companies one of its top priorities and is working closely with Governor Matt Mead’s office and local economic development entities to show companies and organizations that the state is the right place for expansion.

The WSJ article mentions that Echo Star Broadcasting is completing construction on a new data center in Cheyenne and that Verizon, Inc. is looking at a Laramie location for a major facility. In addition, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is constructing a $70 million super computer just outside Cheyenne. Several other data center projects are in place in other areas around the state.

“We continue to see an increased amount of interest and activity from data centric high tech companies,” said Jensen. “It confirms that Wyoming has everything needed for businesses in these data industries to thrive here long term.”
