Dubois, WY - The Fremont County Commission has designated funds for the Fremont County Museums Board to plan and design a replacement Dubois Museum.
At the October 18, 2011 meeting, County Commissioners approved a recommendation by the Capital Improvement and Maintenance Program: Long-term Committee to award a $125,000 grant from the Fremont County General Fund.
The available funds will pay for the planning and design process for the replacement Dubois Museum facility. The museum administration and main exhibit gallery is currently in town-owned buildings. A new structure would provide much needed storage and additional space for interpretive displays.
“It is important to construct a new facility that meets the needs of the museum in its responsibility to care for the artifacts while also telling the unique story of the Dubois community and the Upper Wind River Valley,” said Katrina Krupicka, director of the Dubois Museum. “Planning is the first step in this long process.”
“Over the coming months, members of the Fremont County Museums Board, the Dubois Museum staff and Dubois area residents will meet to develop conceptual, strategic, and interpretive plans for a new facility,” Krupicka continued. “It is an exciting time at the Dubois Museum, and we want to make sure that we do the necessary groundwork to ensure that we design a facility that meets our current needs while being responsible in planning for the future.”
Fremont County Museums Board Chair Tom Duncan said the planning grant was a Fremont County commitment in a process to provide more responsible care and display for the valuable Dubois Museum collection. He said that current building inadequacies pose a threat to the artifacts that are so important to the study and appreciation of Upper Country history and culture.
The Dubois Museum is a Fremont County museum that collects, preserves, and interprets the cultural and natural history of the Upper Wind River Valley. It is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Tuesday through Saturday from Labor Day until Memorial Day. Summer hours are Memorial Day to Labor Day, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week.
